Missing Colors or Poor Print Quality
1) If blank pages are observed on your Brother printer or output print quality is extremely poor or appear out of alignment, then some of the printhead nozzles may have partially dried out or are misfiring. Perform Print Quality checks via Section 1 or 2 below, followed by the printing our 'Ink Recovery Test' print: Test Print CMYK.pdf


Checking the print quality and cleaning the print head
NOTE: If your Brother printer has a touchscreen display please refer to Section 2.

Section 1 (Non-touchscreen Models):
1. Press Menu.
2. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Ink or Ink Management and press OK.
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Test Print and press OK.
4. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Print Quality and press OK.
5. Press Color (Colour) Start. The machine will start printing the Print Quality Check sheet.
6. Once it prints out, check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet. The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK.
7. Do one of the following based on the print quality of the check sheet:
If all lines are clear and visible, choose Yes to finish the Print Quality check.
If you can see missing short lines as shown below, choose No and go to next step.

8. The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK for Black and each of the three colors. Choose Yes or No depending on the print quality of each color.
9. The LCD will ask you if you want to start cleaning. Choose Yes. The machine will start cleaning the necessary print head.
10. After the cleaning is finished, press Color (Colour) Start. The machine will start printing another Print Quality Check sheet.
11. Once it prints out, check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet.

Section 2 (Touchscreen Models):
For Touchscreen models
1. Press the Left or Right arrow key to display Ink. (This step might be skipped in some models.)
2. Press  (Ink).

3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Test Print. (This step might be skipped in some models.)
4. Press Test Print.
5. Press Print Quality.
6. Press Color (Colour) Start or Start. The machine will start printing the Print Quality Check sheet.
7. Once it prints out, check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet.
8. The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK.
9. Do one of the following based on the print quality of the check sheet:
If all lines are clear and visible, press Yes to finish the Print Quality check.
If you can see missing short lines as shown below, press No and go to next step.
 
10. The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK for Black and each of the three colors. Press Yes or No depending on the print quality of each color.
11. The LCD will ask you if you want to start cleaning. Press Color (Colour) Start. The machine will start cleaning the necessary print head.
12. After the cleaning is finished, press Color (Colour) Start. The machine will start printing another Print Quality Check sheet.
13. Once it prints out, check the quality of the check sheet.
14. The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK.

Section 3: Checking the Print Alignment
If images are blurring then perform the following steps.

NOTE: If your Brother printer has a touchscreen display, see down below.
1. Press Menu.
2. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Ink or Ink Management and press OK.
3. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Test Print and press OK.
4. Press the Up or Down arrow key or the dial pad to choose Alignment and press OK.
5. Press Black (Mono) or Color (Colour) Start. The machine will start printing the Alignment Check sheet.
6. For the "A" pattern, enter the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
7. For the "B" pattern, enter the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
8. For the "C" pattern, enter the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
9. For the "D" pattern, enter the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
10. Press Stop/Exit.

To check the Printhead Alignment on Touchscreen Printer Models
1. Press the Left or Right arrow key to display Ink. (This step might be skipped in some models.)
2. Press  (Ink).

3. Press the Up or Down arrow key to display Test Print. (This step might be skipped in some models.)
4. Press Test Print.
5. Press Alignment.
6. Press Black (Mono) StartColor (Colour) Start or Start. The machine will start printing the Alignment Check sheet.
7. For the "A" pattern, press the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
8. For the "B" pattern, press the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
9. For the "C" pattern, press the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
10. For the "D" pattern, press the number of the test print that has the least visible vertical stripes (1-9).
11. Press Stop/Exit.

2) If print quality does not improve replace the suspect ink cartridges with new ones. Retest.
3) If your printer continues to exhibit degraded image quality and/or multiple colors are missing, as observed in the printer’s self test page or nozzle check report, you may need to manually clean the printhead by saturating/flushing the ink ports with warm water. It is suggested to first install a new cartridge, or cartridges, to rule out the ink cartridge as cause of the image degradation.
